IIF or tab-delimited text file

What this tool checks
Parse an IIF before QuickBooks sees it: header rows, dates, balancing, encoding, and duplicates.

Files

IIF or tab-delimited text file

Columns

  • !TRNS / !SPL — header rows must be present and ordered
  • DATE — readable dates, MM/DD/YYYY preferred
  • ACCNT — no blank accounts; names must exist in your company file
  • AMOUNT — each block must balance to zero

Output

.csv · parsed transactions and list rows for review in a spreadsheet.

Then import in QuickBooks Desktop: File → Utilities → Import → Import IIF Files

How to use this file in QuickBooks Desktop

Work on a backup. Run File → Back Up Company first; imports are easiest to undo on a copy of the company file.

  1. Load your .iif file into the tool.
  2. Review the parsed transactions and warnings, such as missing !TRNS, !SPL, or !ENDTRNS header rows and transaction blocks that do not balance.
  3. Export the parsed data as CSV and open it in Excel or another spreadsheet to check dates, amounts, and account names.
  4. Fix problems at the source — in the file or the tool that generated it — and re-import the corrected IIF.
  5. Import into QuickBooks Desktop only after the warnings are resolved: File → Utilities → Import → Import IIF Files.
